When I first experienced Nelson’s Blood, it wasn’t just the taste that hooked me – it was the wild story behind it. There’s something about sipping a drink with a past as colorful (and a little spooky) as its flavor that makes each glass more memorable.

Let me paint the picture: legend has it that after Lord Nelson fell at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, his body was preserved for the journey home in a barrel of rum. Apparently, curious (and thirsty) sailors couldn’t resist – so they “tapped” the barrel for a secret nip on the voyage back. Hence, “Nelson’s Blood.” Yes, it’s got some gothic flair, but somehow that just makes the cocktail more of a conversation piece every time I serve it.

As for the drink itself, it greets you with the deep warmth of rum, then brightens up with fresh lime and a subtle, lingering spice. My crash course with Nelson’s Blood started in a lively Cornish pub on a windy weekend. I was instantly sold. Back home, I experimented so much my friends gamely tolerated a few overly boozy renditions, but I (finally) landed on a blend that everyone agreed hit just right.

Ingredients & Equipment

Makes one glorious cocktail:

  • 2 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Lime wedge, for garnish
  • Plenty of ice

You don’t need barware worthy of a naval commander – just a cocktail shaker and a highball glass. (A rocks glass does in a pinch.)

The Recipe

  1. Add plenty of ice to your shaker
