Last weekend, I found myself at my little home bar when a friend dared me to whip up something new – something we hadn’t tried before. My booze shelf was looking pretty respectable, and the fridge was full of stray bottles of juice and fruit. So, I got to work, mixing and tasting, messing up, and at one point making something that sort of looked (and tasted) like radioactive fruit punch. We laughed, we sampled the misfires, and then finally, I stumbled into a drink that just looked awesome in the glass. We dubbed it the “Ninja Sunrise” – mostly because of the vibrant, sunset layers that reminded us of dramatic anime backdrops, and maybe a little because we felt sneaky about how quickly the first round disappeared.
Honestly, most of my mixology efforts don’t even get names, let alone become party staples, but this one deserves it. It’s light, fruity, and dangerously easy to drink – my new favorite for summer nights or whenever someone’s marathon-watching anime on the couch.
Strength & Profile

There’s just enough sweetness from the juice, some tart kick from fresh lime, and a smooth, invisible punch of vodka. Even my mom now asks for it at family barbecues, and she’s usually a “just hand me a lemonade” person. Not going to lie, that felt like a pretty big win.
Ingredients & Stuff You’ll Need
Here’s what you want lying around:
- 1 oz vodka (whatever’s on your shelf works)
- 1 oz peach schnapps
- 2 oz orange juice (fresh is best, but a carton will do)
- 2 oz cranberry juice
- 1/2 oz lime juice (avoid the neon green stuff – just squeeze a lime if you can)
- A splash of grenadine
- Ice
- A tall glass (highball or Collins is perfect)
- Cocktail shaker (or a big jar with a lid in a pinch)
- Optional: lime wheel or maraschino cherry for showing off
How I Make It
- Toss a hefty scoop of ice into your shaker.
- Measure in the vodka and peach schnapps. Being off by too much makes it taste weird, trust me.
- Add the OJ, cranberry juice, and lime juice. That fresh lime really livens it up.
- Give it a good shake for 15-20 seconds. Don’t overdo it, just enough to get it frosty and blended.
- Fill your glass with new ice and strain the cocktail in.
- Here comes the “sunrise” – pour a little grenadine slowly down the inside of the glass. It’ll settle at the bottom in a gorgeous ombré layer, unless you rush it like me sometimes, in which case it just turns a pretty pink.
- Top it off with a lime wheel or cherry if you’re feeling impressive.
Want a booze-free version? Ditch the vodka and schnapps, use peach nectar or splash in peach soda. My nephew steals these, especially if I add extra grenadine – he calls it “fruit punch plus” and gets all excited.
This drink is perfect with salty snacks – think chips, popcorn, or just about anything you’d want on movie night. The sweet and tart balance is also surprisingly nice if you’ve got something spicy on the table.
A word of warning: these are way too drinkable, especially when it’s hot out. The fruit flavors kind of hide how much alcohol is in there, so maybe pace yourself after the second round (ask me how I know).
If you want to experiment – a friend tried swapping vodka for white rum, which gives a whole tropical twist. Someone else did bourbon, which I was skeptical about, but apparently it works if you’re into that. The juices are flexible too – sometimes I use more cranberry, sometimes more orange, depending on what’s left in the fridge.
Anyway, if you need a crowd-pleaser or just want to feel a little fancy on a random night in, give the Ninja Sunrise a shot. It’s brought me more compliments (and laughs) than anything else I’ve made – and if my mom likes it, you know it’s a keeper.
